City honours Currie RFC - report on event |
More Details: |
In his welcoming address to officials, players and members of Currie RFC who attended a Civic Reception in the City Chambers on Monday 19 July, the Lord Provost, George Grubb, congratulated the Club for outstanding achievements in this its 40th Anniversary year. He commented "not only have your first fifteen secured the Premier League title for the second time in three years but the Club's other senior teams also won promotion in their respective leagues; the Colts have carried off the under 18 National Cup; the under 15s did the same in their National Cup campaign, with both finals being played at Murrayfield, the home of Scottish Rugby. Even the S1 Mini Team in your very successful Youth Section went through the season undefeated; what achievements for a Club that was only established in 1970.
The Lords Provost and attending City of Edinburgh Pentland Ward Councillors praised Currie RFC for their Community approach to sport; it was a fine example for other organisations to emulate despite the meagre and limited pitch resources at the Club's disposal. Elected members were aware that the Councils recent "Open Spaces" consultative document showed no sports facilities development to the west of the City by-pass where an increasing number of young families were now residing. It had been brought to the attention of the City's Planning Department that all-weather pitch facilities in the area were wholly inadequate and the problem needed to be addressed urgently.
In his reply the President of Currie RFC, John Muir thanked the Lord Provost for the honour that the City had bestowed on the Club and his kind words of encouragement were appreciated. He emphasised that sports organisations such as Currie RFC cannot survive without increasing and committed help and co-operation from Local and National Government. The authorities must not forget the tremendous amount of time and effort given by unpaid volunteers to ensure that sports clubs continue to operate but they must have the facilities to do this. Currie RFC has 700 membes, over 100 senior playing members and over 300 junior playing members all using just two rugby pitches which they share with Balerno High School. To say that these pitches were over-used is an understatement! For matches and training the Club's managers and coaches have to search and travel considerable distances to fulfil their needs. The Club will keep pressing the City of Edinburgh Council regarding adequate pitch facilities at Malleny Park. The Club President was looking forward to a large financial investment in sports pitches that the Currie and Balerno area so desperately require.
Several players from the Colts, Mini and Midi section of the Club attended with their families; they said that experiencing a Civic Reception in the City Chambers and playing at Murrayfield was 'pretty cool' and would not be forgotten. Club Captain, Andy Adam and his wife said the event was a tremendous honour and a fine reward for a team effort. Recently married Andrew Binikos and his wife, and also Richard Snedden, Michael Entwhistle and their partners appreciated the special occasion that was somewhat different from the usual rugby night out!
